Introduction– in a recent Gallop poll, 53% of Americans believe in hell. (47% of Americans don’t believe in hell). This percent goes down dramatically when the people are highly educated or wealthy. In Sweden, only 17% believe in hell; France-22%, Netherlands- 28%, Great Britain-23%.
Satan’s deception– Ray Comfort, in The Way of the Master training ministry, says one of the main deceptions of Satan is that “hell does not exist.” If hell doesn’t exist, then why be saved? Saved from what? Since there is no eternal punishment, then “I can live my life the way I want to.” The concept of “no hell” negates the work and suffering of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. After all, he died to save us from our sins; past, present, and future. He died to save us from hell. Jesus became sin for us on the cross.
Hell (Gehenna) is a place of suffering and punishment– Jude 5-7 says, “Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home–these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire (hell).” 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 God is just: he will pay back trouble to those who trouble believers and give relief to you who are troubled. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power.
The Lake of fire is the eternal abode of constant torment of all human unbelievers throughout history, Satan, the antichrist, and the false Prophet (Rev. 20:10). Does God put people in hell, or do they choose it? I will answer this in the next blog…..
Hell is a place of weeping for some – James 5:1-3 Riches don’t last, and hell is a place of weeping and wailing and misery-Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.
What Jesus teaches about hell– Jesus taught us a lot about hell especially in the Gospel of Matthew. More on this in my next blog. Learn about the difference between Hades and Hell.
